The pumping beam (laser E1) is coupled-in, aligned with the optical waveguide (E4) fundamental mode. It is reflected back and forth (E5, E3). After each passage through the waveguide, alignment of the re-reflected beam is altered sufficiently for its return at a higher mode, causing virtually complete absorption of the pumping radiation in the optical waveguide
