A radiographic panel has a luminescent layer contg. phosphor particles. The particles each have a prim. and a sec. portion, the sec. portion being external to and continuous with the prim. portion. The prim. and sec. portions contains prim. and sec. phosphors resp. characterised by relationships MFXl-zIz:uMaXa:yA:eJ:tD:dS (I) and M'FX'l-z+qIz-q:u'Ma'Xa':y'A':e'J':t'D':d'S' (II) respectively (where, M and M' = Mg, Ca, Sr and/or Ba; X and X' = Cl and/or Br; Ma and Ma' = Na, K, Rb and/or Cs; Xa and Xa' = F, Cl and/or Br; A and A' = Eu, Cl, Sm and/or Tb; J and J' = BeO, MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, ZnO, Al2O3, La2O3, In2O3, SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2, GeO2, SnO2, Nb2O5, To2O5 and/or ThO3; D and D' = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co and/or Ni; Z = more than 1 x 10-2 and less than 1; q = 1 - 10-2 to 1 and is less than or equal to 2; u and u' = 0 to 1; y and y' = 1 x 10-4 to 0.1; e and e' = 0 to 1; t and t' = 0 to 1 x 10-2; and d and d' = 0 to 0.020. Also claimed is a composite phosphor contg. the prim. and sec. portions as defined above. Also claimed is a method of phosphor modification involving treating a phosphor mass contg. phosphor as defined by (I) to give a composite phosphor in which a sec. phosphor defined by (II) encapsulates a prim. phosphor defined by (I).
