A method for removing impurities from a lithium battery electrolyte soln. comprising a lithium salt solute in an organic soln. comprises placing lithium and a second metal with which lithium is capable of intercalation in electrical contact with one another to form a bimetallic construct. The construct is placed in contact with the electrolyte soln. to convert the impurities into reaction products and to form a purified electrolyte soln. The bimetallic construct and reaction products are separated from the purified electrolyte soln.
