Device to determine the end, and its profile, of an elongated object

Determination of the shape and or position of the lateral surface of an elongated object (1) such as a metal sheet which is being displaced at right angles to a detection beam. The lateral surface is scanned using a light beam (21c) incident perpendicular to the surface, and which is displaced in the orthogonal plane in the longitudinal direction. The light beam spot on the surface is observed with a camera at an oblique angle with a strip of photo-sensitive elements (32), which extend in the plane orthogonal to the direction of displacement of the beam and an anamorphic optical device (33) adapted to generate an image of the light spot on the array as a function of the beam position and to calculate from triangulation the shape of the lateral surface and its transverse position.
