PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device with higher and variable illumination strength than that for conventional devices. SOLUTION: An illumination device 5 has an additional optical element 15 and this additional optical element is selectively movable to an illumination light path 7 and has a positive refractive force and when the focal length for observation of a microscope for operation is invariable, illumination aperture can be selectively improved in an optical axis region.
