Material (1) comprising separate items or pieces is placed on a static section (2.1) of a central conveyor belt (2) and then moved to a continuously- adjustable transfer zone of a pivotable section (2.2), with a pivot angle of approximately 90 deg to left or right. The material is then transferred to peripheral conveyors (3,4). When material is to be combined, the direction of travel is reversed.
