The invention concerns an apparatus and a method for gas phase chromatography, said apparatus (10) comprising a flame ionization detector (13) wherein circulates a carrier gas coming from a tube (30) supplying carrier gas, a combustible gas coming from a tube (31) supplying combustible gas, and an added gas coming from two tubes (32, 33) supplying added gas. The combustible gas is a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen produced by a water electrolysis device. One part of the added gas is mixed with the carrier gas and the combustible gas before the site where the flame is formed. The other part of the added gas is input in the detector in the proximity of the site where the flame is formed. Said detector is not supplied with separate combustive gas. The invention is useful for reducing the number of gas reservoirs required.
