For each cylinder there are at least two rocker arms journalled on a rocker arm shaft for operating a respective one of the valves. A transmission (15,17,18) selectively moves the exhaust valve (5) from a closed position toward an open position during the engine intake stroke to draw exhaust into the cylinder (30) during the intake stroke.
