A heating tip 1 made of copper or copper alloy includes a cavity 5 for insertion and containment of a heat generating portion 4, the inner wall circumferential surface of the cavity being non-circular in cross-section. The heat generating portion 4 has an outer wall circumferential surface identical to this cross-section of the cavity 5. This cross-sectional shape of the cavity 5 and heat generating portion 4 is preferably polygonal, and may range from trigonal to octagonal. This polygonal shape increases the area of contact between the heating tip 1 and the heat generating portion 4 compared with the standard circular cross-sectional shape, thereby increasing the efficiency of heat transfer to the heating tip 1. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing a heating tip 1 (see figures 2 to 8), wherein the insertion cavity 5, which may have a non-circular cross-sectional shape, is formed by forging using a machine tool such as a header or a press. Preferably the forging method comprises a first step of applying drawing and centring for the tip substrate 2 and a second step of forming the insertion cavity 5. Preferably, a corrosion resistant iron plated layer 3 is applied to the surface of the tip substrate 3 after forming the insertion cavity 5 by forging, but with the opening to the cavity 5 closed to prevent damaging the inside. An electroless plated layer 6, which may be nickel, is preferably applied to at least the inner surface of the insertion cavity 5. |
