The invention relates to an absorbent single use hygiene item, comprising a liquid-tight back sheet (4), a liquid-permeable cover sheet (2), an absorbent body (6) containing super-absorbent polymer materials which is suitable for storing bodily fluids, especially urine, and which is located between said back sheet (4) and said cover sheet (2), and a two-layer intermediate part (8) which takes up and distributes liquid. Said intermediate part (8) is made up of a top layer (18) consisting of synthetic fibres and a bottom layer (20), the average pore volume of the top layer (18) being greater than the average pore volume of the bottom layer (20), and is arranged between the absorbent body (6) and the cover sheet (2). The inventive hygiene item is configured in such a way that the bottom layer (20) is made essentially exclusively of chemically cross-linked cellulose fibres and the top layer (18) overlaps the longitudinal ends (21) of the bottom layer with its longitudinal edge sections (19) so that the hygiene item is able to absorb more than one of loss of liquid and give the wearer a feeling of dryness. The cross-linked cellulose fibres of the bottom layer (20) are also more hydrophilic than the synthetic fibres of the top layer (18) of the intermediate part (8).
