PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dissolve deficiency in gradation on a dark and visually conspicuous screen without altering the power consumption and the maximum display luminance. SOLUTION: High-order six bits in an eight bit digital video signal to be displayed are used to display six sub-fields within one-field period. By this, the period for each sub-field is extended and the display brightness is raised. And a FF circuit 3 which, for each bit of a digital video signal, is set with the data for each pixel of the video signal and reset by vertical synchronizing signals S2 is used to detect vacant sub-fields. When a vacant sub-field is detected, the sub-field is skipped by a data selection circuit 4a and a number-of- lighting pulse selecting circuit 4b to display the next sub-field. Thus, when there are two or more sub-fields, substantially all eight bits, namely 256 gradations can be displayed in the field. |
