A coarse chopper (15) minces discarded material consisting mainly of polyethylene foil. The chopped material is collected in a silo (24), and from there is fed at a substantially constant flow to a first washing vat (44), where the material is mixed with water and is stirred to precipitate heavy sludge and to deliver a mix of water with lightweight material comprising mainly polyethylene. A first centrifugal separator (50) subjects the mix of water and lightweight material to a strong, swirling motion within a perforated cage having holes of a diameter smaller than the average size of the lightweight material, in order to expel the water and the flaking material out of the cage. After further washing and drying steps (58, 62, 64), the purified material is squeezed in one or more presses (70, 74), is re-chopped to a fine size in a fine chopper (78) and is blown through a hot-air drying tower (84). <IMAGE> |
