Process for monitoring a B cpd. (I) that forms orthoborate ions in a fluid system comprises: (a) dissolving 10 pts.wt. (I) and up to 1 pt.wt. of a tracer (II) in an aq. or mixed solvent medium; (b) adding the soln. to the fluid system; and (c) anlaysing fluid sampels from the system to detect (II), thereby detecting (I). Also claimed is a process as aove in which (I) is boric acid and step (a) comprises forming a homogeneous stable mixt. contg. (I) and (II) in a known ratio. Also claimed is a process for inhibiting amorphous silica scale formation in an aq. system, comprising: (a) dissolving (I) and (II) in a solvent contg. water and a water-soluble polypolar (sic) organic cpd. (III) with a molecular wt. of up to 200 to form a homogeneous stable soln. with a known (I):(II) ratio; (b) adding the soln. to the aq. system in an amt. sufficient to inhibit scale formation; and (c) monitoring (I) by detecting (II) in the aq. system. |
