PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a wire rod for steel wire, excellent in scale adhesion in the course of conveyance between stages before wire drawing and excellent in scale peeling property in the stage just before wire drawing. SOLUTION: The wire rod has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.6-1.2% C, 0.10-0.40% Si, 0.20-0.90% Mn, <=0.02% P, <=0.003% S, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and also has tensile strength specified by inequality TS<=85×(C)+70 [where C is carbon content (wt.%) and TS is tensile strength (kgf/mm<2> )]. By this method, the necessity of process annealing at the time of wire drawing can be obviated, and a stage for removing the scale resultant from process annealing can be obviated. Moreover, it is preferable that this wire rod has a microstructure in which the ratio of upper bainite structure is >=80% by area ratio and that the maximum value of S in the S-concentrated region in the interface between the scale adhering to the surface of a steel material after wire rod rolling and the steel material is regulated to <=0.07%.
