Titanium oxide-based photocatalyst, process for preparing the same, and use thereof

The photocatalyst of the invention is a photocatalyst comprising mainly titanium oxide and crystalline zirconium titanate wherein a ratio of zirconium to titanium (Zr/Ti) by atomic percentage is in a rage of 0.001 to 0.5. This photocatalyst may be used even in the form of a thin film fixed onto the surface of a substrate such as a metallic material, an inorganic material and an organic material. This photocatalyst can be produced by calcining a reacted product of a titanium compound with a zirconium compound in air atmosphere. This photocatalyst or a material carrying the photocatalyst thereon enables a harmful substances in air or in water, or a substances deposited on the material to be decomposed, rendered harmless or removed under photo irradiation.
