A device for controlling the brake system of a vehicle operates in a control phase, in which the wheel brakes are automatically applied in response to a panic application at To and T 3 of a brake pedal, and switches to a regulating phase, when an easing off of pedal application at T 1 by the driver is sensed. In the control phase, a setpoint (or threshold) value for the deceleration of the vehicle is set to a maximum value A MAX and in the regulating phase T 1 -T 3 the setpoint value A SOLL is variable and is dependent on the operating state of the control device. The brake pressure P VOR in the two phases is controlled by a comparison of the actual deceleration and the setpoint value. On release of the brake pedal at T 4 the control device reverts to a stand-by phase.
