A device for removing used medical needles, comprises a casing (1) with an opening in it for receiving a needle screwed into a sleeve (6). A sensor in the device detects the entry of the needle into the opening. A mechanism inside the casing is used to remove the needle from the sleeve, consisting of an electric motor (16) coupled to a tool that pulls the needle. The tool is rotated by a round disc (13) provided with catches that lie in a channel extending in the length direction of the opening for the needle. As the disc is rotated the catches engage with the inserted needle and twist it out of the sleeve. A storage space is provided in the device for removed needles. The needle removing mechanism includes two opposing catches that are constantly in resilient contact with the periphery of the casing opening. A ridge profile on the inner surface of this periphery engages with the catches, and is formed with alternating large and small radius sectors. As the disc is rotated the catches are simultaneously engaged with the needle, then upon further rotation the needle is removed stepwise, and then once the needle has been removed they are rotated further until they reach their starting position. Preferably the catches are made from resilient plastic material, especially nylon.
