The system transfers electric power from a distribution network via an overhead conductor and a traction motor to the mechanical drive shafts of the vehicle. The system has one or more electrical machines between the distribution network and the drive shafts. Each electric machine has one or more windings with an insulation system consisting of two semiconducting layers. - Each layer constitutes essentially an equipotential surface with solid insulation between them. One of the layers has the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the solid insulation. The machine has a magnetic circuit with a magnetic core. The solid insulation is a cable for high voltage with one or more current carrying conductors (31) surrounded by two semiconducting layers (32,34) with intermediate insulating layers (33) of solid insulation.
