The carrier (1) has a shell (27) for attachment to a bicycle frame (2) with at least one stiffener (21). The stiffener is a rod which is tensioned across the frame between releasable mountings for (13-16) for the carrier. The stiffener (21) is longer than the spacing of the holders (13,16) against which it lies, and at least one of the holders has a nodule. At least one stiffener can be formed as a shell. (27).
