The present invention enables a compact, lightweight assisting motor to assist the rider in pedaling a bicycle and secures sufficient assistive force. An assisting motor is controlled in a duty control mode which increases the duty factor according to the increase of the pedaling force, when the traveling speed is in a low traveling speed range. After the duty factor has been increased to 100%, the assisting motor is controlled in a constant-watt control mode, which drives the assisting motor so that the assisting motor exerts its maximum power regardless of traveling speed and pedaling force, when the traveling speed is in a high traveling speed range. Since the output of the assisting motor need not be reduced in the high traveling speed range requiring a large assistive force, the assisting motor need not have any excess output capacity and hence may be a compact, lightweight motor. <MATH> |
