PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently, economically and completely detoxicate an aliphatic halogen compound such as dichlorodifluoromethane by treating the compound by using a binary catalyst consisting of ferric fluoride and/or ferric chloride as a main catalyst and cupric fluoride and/or cupric chloride as a promoter in the presence of water. SOLUTION: While using water instead of a lower alcohol, a binary catalyst consisting of ferric fluoride and/or ferric chloride as a first component (a main catalyst) and cupric fluoride and/or cupric chloride as a second component (a promoter) is used. As the reaction temperature of the catalytic decomposition system, a prescribed temperature higher than that in a conventional method is employed for efficient contact decomposition of an aliphatic halogen compound by water in the surface of the binary catalyst. By the catalytic decomposition of the aliphatic halogen compound, the compound is decomposed to CO2 , HC1, HF and byproduct formation of lower monohaloalkyl such as methyl chloride and CFC-13 is efficiently prevented or suppressed. Consequently, this method is significant as an ozone depletion preventive technique. |
