The gas generator incorporates an igniter (1) which ignites fuel (4) in a combustion chamber (2). As a result, a combustion gas (19) is produced which emerges from the combustion chamber openings (6). A turbine wheel (8) is positioned outside the combustion chamber in front of the openings (6). The kinetic energy of the combustion gas stream is at least partially converted into a torque transferred to a suction unit. This unit sucks in external air (20) as a supplement to the combustion gas (19) for blowing up the air bag.
