[Also in Group XL (b)] A data storage apparatus, Fig. 7, comprises two shift registers X, Y and a number of storage pulse generators 17-25. In the basic form of storage generator, Figs. 2 and 3, a magnetic storage ring 1 has windings 7, 8, 9. A firing pulse at 4 will produce a rectangular output pulse at 5, provided that at some time prior to the receipt of the firing pulse a cocking pulse has been received at 3. The apparatus of Fig. 7 uses generators requiring two coincident pulses for cocking. Circulating shift register X is started upon receipt of the pulse p at t 0 and delivers pulses in sequence at t1 at terminals 11, 12, 13. Also at t 1 code group elements are received at a, b, c. If the first code group received at t 1 is 101, units 17 and 19 are cocked. If the next group is 001 (at t 1 ) unit 22 is cocked. A trigger pulse A at t 5 sets circulating register Y in operation to deliver pulses at t 0 sequentially at terminals 14, 15, 16. Thus signals stored in the columns I, II, III are sequentially read out. Receipt of a pulse q stops the action of registers X and Y after all the stored characters have been read out.
