A sensor is provided comprising a first layer of material provided with a second material on one side and a third material on the other side. The environment to be sensed is in direct or indirect contact with the second material and the reference environment is in direct or indirect contact with a third material. The level of the component to be sensed gives rise to a detectable effect in the sensor. The second and/or third materials are mixed conductors and the first material is an electrolyte material. The use of urania, and particularly urania doped with rare earth metals is preferred for the second and third materials to give a particularly sensitive and robust sensor.
