PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable control of both the composition and microstructure of tin oxide powder as important factors for improving performances of nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, by dispersing a specific organic solvent soluble compound in an organic solvent to give a precursor solution, gelatinizing and baking the gel. SOLUTION: An organic solvent-soluble tin compound and/or metal tin and at least one soluble compound selected from the group consisting of an organic solvent-soluble alkaline earth metal, an organic solvent-soluble rare earth element compound, an organic solvent-soluble transition element compound, organic solvent-soluble element compounds of the groups 13-15 of the periodic table (except the organic solvent-soluble tin compound) and an organic solvent-soluble chalcogen element compound are dissolved in an organic solvent such as an alcohol, acetone or acetonitrile to give a precursor solution. The solution is concentrated to dryness to give a gel, which is baked at 250-1,200 deg.C, preferably 50-1,100 deg.C for 0.03-8 hours to give tin oxide powder having 10-150 m<2> /g specific surface area and 1-30 nm particle diameter. |
