A barrel type engine with two-stroke cycle of operation is described including two engine halves (50), each half having a plurality of pumping cylinders (203-205) and a matching number of power cylinders (213-215). Double-ended pistons (200, 210) impart rotational motion to the engine shaft (10) by a cam (20). In operation, intake air is drawn into the pumping cylinders (203-205) and then transferred to the power cylinders (213-215) by a transfer duct system (220-222). Due to the natural timing characteristics inherent in the engine of the present invention, intake air is forcibly transferred to the power cylinders (213-215) with minimum parasitic pumping loss, ensuring favorable cylinder scavenging and filling for maximum efficiency. The diameter of the pumping cylinders (203-205) is larger than that of the power cylinders (213-215) resulting in a net supercharging effect and further enhancing power output.
