The reader has light emitters and receivers associated with signal processors (24). A sequence of measurements of the light sent back by a finger (9) is effected and sent to the reader. Cardiac pulsations are detected by photoplethysmography in order to verify that the finger is authentic. The processors measure frequency (241) to determine the characteristic rhythm of the finger's pulsations, and amplitude (242) to determine the pulsation's amplitude characteristic. Further processors (25) consult a library (30) of at least one of the characteristics of a finger and to authenticate this finger by comparing the measurement and history.
