Perforated tickets are printed by apparatus adapted to produce periodic or aperiodic patterns of lines on the tickets overlapping the perforations such that the pattern is displaced successively from ticket to ticket in the feed direction. Two cylinders, Fig. 4 (not shown), print on the ticket web, each cylinder including a plate 20 carrying a wavy or zig-zag pattern which is printed out of phase with the other pattern. The pattern is displaced from ticket to ticket by stepping a pattern-printing cylinder carrying a plate (23), Fig. 7 (not shown) by means of a ratchet mechanism (28), which engages teeth on a ring-shaped support (24). Each cylinder may print in a different colour and may carry a numbering unit 13, 14 so as to print a number on both sides of the perforations, the numbers on each ticket being at right angles to each other and in differently coloured inks. The perforations may be formed before, during, or after printing.
