The appliance has a wheeled frame with holder for a turnable gasket roll. A drive engine (4) is connected via a transmission (5) to at least one of the wheels (2,3). Drive and transmission are positioned above the driven wheel. One and/or both may be carried on the frame. The drive connection between wheel and engine contains a clutch, preferably a centrifugal clutch. The engine and preferably transmission have a cover (6), with a top surface (64) providing a support for the gasket roll (16). A feeler unit (25) to scan the roll is positioned behind it, and is connected to the drive engine.
