PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device with bright luminous display and a high contrast. SOLUTION: This device is arranged so that a productΔnd of a refractive index anisotropyΔn of liquid crystal of a liquid crystal cell 1 provided with a color filter on a surface opposed to a lower glass substrate and a thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer; a first and a second phase plates 14, 15; and each phase difference R1 , R2 satisfy relationship among them expressed byΔnd/2-40<=R1 <=Δnd/2+40,Δnd/2-40<=R2 <=Δnd/2+40 orΔnd/4-20<=R1 <=Δnd/4+20,Δnd/4-20<=R2 <=Δnd/4+20. Also, an angle which a polarized light axisαof a polarizing plate 17 forms with an alignment direction (a) of an upper alignment film 26 is set to 10 to 50 degrees or 100 to 140 degrees counterclockwise looking from the incident side of the light; and angle which the phase lag axisβof the first phase difference board 14 forms with the alignment direction (a) of the upper alignment layer 26 is set to 60 to 130 degrees; an angle which the phase lag axisγof the second phase difference board 15 forms with the phase lag axisβof the first phase plate 14 is set to 10 to 30 degrees or 60 to 80 degrees or 100 to 120 degrees or 150 to 170 degrees, respectively.
