Loose material is fed continuously into a closed vessel on one side and forms a fluidised bed which moves progressively along a sieve to an outlet on the opposite side while also undergoing temperature changes. Also claimed is a closed vessel (1) divided by a sieve with inclined apertures so that an air flow rising through the sieve moves a fluidised bed of material across the sieve from a material inlet to an outlet, the space below the sieve being divided into compartments (41-43) to enable a temperature gradient to be established in the direction of bed movement.
