BASE FOR LATERAL FILE

A lateral file cabinet (10) includes an enclosure (11) defined by top and bottom walls (17, 14) and first and second side walls (15, 16) which are spaced apart to define a hollow interior. The bottom wall (14) includes a base panel (41) formed of a wood fiber material such as particle board or chip board and the side walls include horizontal inward opening channels (38) which receive opposite side edges of the base panel (41) to define a structurally rigid connection therebetween. The base panel (41) has a relatively high density which provides sufficient weight so as to completely or partially counter-balance the weight of a loaded file drawer (12) to eliminate or reduce the weight of a separate counter-weight.
