The method involves evaluating a decoupled proportion of a forward wave provided by a signal source, and a wave reflected by the load. A decoupled portion of the forward wave from the signal source is mixed with a frequency-shifted signal, and the product is filtered to obtain a side-band signal. The first decoupled portion of the forward wave is mixed with the side-band signal, and the product is filtered to gain a first frequency-shifted component of the product. A second decoupled portion of the forward wave is mixed with the side-band signal, and the product is filtered to obtain a second frequency-shifted component of the product. Both first and second frequency-shifted components are evaluated to determine a mismatch.
