Propionic acid derivatives represented by general formula (II) or salts thereof, which exhibit hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activities, wherein A<1> is optionally substituted aryl or a heterocyclic group; Y<2> is C1-C5 alkylene, X4 is nil, oxygen or sulfur; W1 is an optionally substituted naphthalene, quinoline, indole, benzisoxazole or benzo[b]thiophene ring; R<4> is hydrogen or C1-C8 alkyl; X<5> is oxygen or sulfur; and R<5> is optionally substituted C1-C8 alkyl, aralkyl or aryl.
