The engine comprises a piston (20) which works in a cylinder-liner (21). At the bottom end of the liner is a slide (24) working with it to form a valve. This moves with the piston away from the liner so as to form with the latter an annular inlet port (210) for scavenging air to the cylinder (22). The port shuts again with upward movement of the piston towards the top dead-centre position. The slide can be driven to and fro by the piston, while a first spring and-or damper unit is mounted between piston and slide. Further spring and-or damper units (207) aid, restrict and-or damp movement of the slide.
