PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve energy efficiency and to perform maintenance at low cost by supplying a material on an inclined belt and driving the belt so that the inclined surface thereof is turned upwardly to allow particles to fall in a large number of small pockets provided to the surface of the belt. SOLUTION: A belt type separator 20 separates sand, waste refuse and fine particles 22 from wood chips 24 and the surface of the endless belt 26 moved between upper and lower rolls 28, 30 has an angleαwith respect to a horizontal surface. The outer surface 54 of the belt 26 has a large number of pockets formed of ridges and projections. The relatively large material 24 is separated when it falls along the inclined surface stepwise and small particles or fine particles are caught by the pockets or grooves and moved as the belt 26 rises toward the upper roll 28. The belt 26 is changed in its direction when it reaches the upper roll 28 to fall toward the lower roll 30 and the fine particles 22 in the pockets are removed by a combination of gravity and an agitator 64 or a cleaning means.
