In a sheet metal hydrostatic forming press, the novelty is that (a) the upper and/or lower die plates (21, 31) are mounted wrt. the ram (15a) and/or the press table (15b) for equalising sheet thickness tolerances; (b) at least one of the die plates (21, 31) is flexible; and (c) a hydraulic functional layer (27), which is fastened at all sides, is located between the flexible die plate. Preferably, the hydraulic functional layer (27) consists of an incompressible medium which flows under pressure, preferably polyurethane.
