PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a sheet feed direction mechanism as to its throughput and the area occupied. SOLUTION: The sheet feed direction changing mechanism 10 has a roller device 22 comprised of three rollers 24, 26 and 28, and a sheet stopping device 39. A sheet 12 passing within the mechanism is (1) passed,between the center roller 24 and the upper roller 26 and thereby moved in a first direction 16 (R), (2) stopped, and (3) urged to a nip (roll interval), between the center roller 24 and the lower roller 28 whereby the sheet 12 is moved in a second direction 16 (L).
