The invention relates to a self-contained shelf unit with a variable compartmented structure, e.g. a shelf, storage, display or transport unit, which is composed of several different compartmentalization walls or various sized prefabricated individual compartments forming a structure consisting of various sized compartments placed alongside and above each other or monolithic-shaped, and which can be at least partially modified when the compartimentalization walls or individual prefabricated compartments are not solidly fixed to each other. In the inventive shelf unit, compartments of different sized, single or multiple modular components (1) are assembled in a gridlike, overlapping design and are connected exclusively on supports formed by parts constituting the compartmentalization walls to obtain a variable compartmented structure which is self-contained, stable, self-supporting and easily accessible from the front and back.
