Method of manufacturing of liquid crystal displays on plastic films using bistable liquid crystals

The process for producing LCDs with bistable liquid crystals on plastic foils involves (a) applying organic and/or inorganic protective layers (24, 25) onto a preferably 50-150 mu thick transparent plastic foil (22, 23); (b) applying and structuring a transparent conductive organic or inorganic layer (27) to form drive electrodes; (c) applying a black matrix (31) to cover non-driven areas of the display for increasing contrast; (d) applying an organic or inorganic insulation layer over the entire surface; (e) applying an organic or inorganic orientation layer (26) for orienting the liquid crystal molecules; (f) applying spacers (28) and then a cover foil (22) and adhesively bonding the cover foil (22) to the base foil (23); (g) introducing the liquid crystal (21) filling; and (h) sealing the liquid crystal (21) cells under pressure so that the cell internal pressure is less than atmospheric pressure. Also claimed is an LCD with a bistable liquid crystal and a plastic foil substrate, the liquid crystal being an SCT (stabilised colesteric texture) liquid crystal or an FLC (ferroelectric liquid crystal). Further claimed are plastic cards having the above LCD.
