PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device improved in contrast. SOLUTION: An illumination pulse signal MCK has one field divided equally into (n) subfields of a cycle T so that illumination pulse width in a sudfields of the cycle T is T'/(2 raised to (m)th power) (where T>=T' and m=0, 1, 2, 3...). A combination of a subfield having no illumination pulse width, a subfield with illumination pulse width given by m=0, and subfields with illumination pulse width given by m=1, 2, 3... makes it possible to set gradations more than actually needed gradations, and a necessary number of gradations set along a specific characteristic curve so that each set luminance level matches a human feeling to luminance are selected out of many gradation settings. |
