PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel wire having high strength and high toughness, having strength and toughness higher than those of a steel wire in which lamellar cementite is composed of nano-crystal and free from the occurrence of longitudinal crack at the time of twisting, etc., and its production. SOLUTION: This steel wire is composed essentially of fine pearlite and/or pseudo-pearlite, and lamellar cementite in the structure is amorphous. Further, in the case of a steel wire composed essentially of bainite, cementite in the structure is amorphous. At the time of producing these steel wires, a method where patenting treatment and cold wiredrawing are repeated plural times and final wiredrawing is performed under cooling while regulating the value of true strain to >=2.0 is adopted.
