The system has a central unit 2 that connects with a number of local subsystems 3 over a communication network 4. The central unit has a computer 5 coupled to an input/output 7,8. Built into the unit is a system operating module 9 together with information processing software 10 that identifies and processes data for the sub systems. The computer is connected with sub unit input 13 and output units 12 in addition to the standard I/O units, via a sub unit interface 11. The sub units are portable units, e.g. mobile telephones.
