A compact and lightweight gas generator for an air bag, which effectively utilizes a filter, comprising a first member (1) with one open end, a second member (3) for closing the open end (2) of the first member; an igniter (5) and a gas-generating member (6) disposed inside a container (4) defined by the first and second members; a filter (8) disposed round the container and encompassing a gas spout (7) bored in the container; and a belt member (9) for restricting the expansion of the filter, disposed round the filter and being narrower than the filter, or a net member (59) for covering the filter.
