The method involves generating a static magnetic field in an area under examination on which a gradient magnetic field is superimposed. This creates undesirable alternating electromagnetic forces. Using magnetostriction techniques forces are generated from the gradient magnetic field which contain a component opposing those electromagnetic forces. The forces with the opposing components can be created by changing the dimensions of the materials producing the magnetostriction. The value of the opposing forces can be adjusted by prestressing the magnetostrictive material. The individual parts of the magnetostrictive system can be in strip or flat form
