The method involves measuring different operating parameters (BETP) with several sensors (SEN), using a control parameter output device (PWG) and two independent computer units (RE1,RE2) to control and regulate the engine (BKM) according to the operating and control parameters (BETP,BEDP). The first computer unit (RE1) receives the control and operating parameters as inputs and derives drive signals for the engine actuators (AKT) which influence its operating characteristics and a signal (GWS) representing a desired engine characteristic. The second computer unit (RE2) compares the desired characteristic signal and a signal (MSS) representing the current engine characteristic for plausibility checking. If the comparison indicates an implausible relationship an engine fault is diagnosed.
