PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain 5-cyano-2-sulfonylpyridine useful as a synthetic intermediate of a pyridine compound as a starting material of a medicine or an agrochemical. SOLUTION: This 5-cyano-2-sulfonylpyridine is expressed by the formula I [R<1> is an alkyl, a cycloalkyl, a (substituted) aryl, etc.]. The compound of the formula I is obtained by producing 2-alkaliformyl-3-butene nitrile by reacting 3-butene nitrile with a formate in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate of the formula: R<3> OM (R<3> is an alkyl; M,is an alkali metal), producing a diene compound of the formula II (R<2> is an acyl, an alkyl, etc.) by reacting with an alkylating agent, etc., and reacting a sulfonyl cyanide of the formula: N≡C-SO2 R<1> with the resultant diene compound.
