Selective hydrogenation of acetylenic or dienic hydrocarbons comprises use of bimetallic catalyst containing Group VIII metal and additional element introduced as water-soluble organometallic precursor

In the preparation of the catalyst the added metal, M, is introduced in the form of a water soluble organometallic precursor comprising at least on carbon-M bond. The presence of the added metal gives improved activity and selectivity of the catalyst. The selective hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds, e.g. acetylenics and diolefins, is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising a support, a group VIII metal and added metal, M, chosen from germanium (Ge), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), rhenium (Re), niobium (Nb), gallium (Ga), indium (In), thallium (Tl,) gold (Au) and silver (Ag). In the preparation of the catalyst, the metal M is incorporated using a water soluble organometallic complex comprising at least one carbon-M bond in solution at a pH less than 10. Independent claims are also included for the preparation of the catalyst and its use in selective hydrogenation.
