PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain the oil film forming condition similar with a current one, keep a high coefficient of traction even in case of the operation in the high temperature condition, and transmit the large driving force without increasing the pushing force. SOLUTION: This toroidal continuously variable transmission for an automobile is provided with traction driving rolling bodies 3, 5 and 6, and the traction oil is interposed between rolling surfaces of the traction driving rolling bodies 3, 5 and 6 to transmit the power. The rolling surfaces of the traction driving rolling bodies 3, 5 and 6 are formed with rugged parts having a height difference larger than the oil film thickness so that this toroidal continuously variable transmission is always operated near the critical shearing stress.
