This method makes a strimmer-type monofilament (1) of e.g. a nylon or polyurethane. Following its extrusion, stretching takes place below the melting temperature, to between twice and ten times the original length. It is then cooled to room temperature, resulting in high-strength monofilament. The novel feature of the method is removal of plastic by laser or mechanical means afterwards. This varies and reduces the cross section. Relative motion takes place between means and filament: either may move. Such motion is axial (X) and is intermittent or continuous. In addition there is rotation in only one direction or alternatively, oscillatory rotation. Also claimed is the equipment to carry out the process, essentially as described.
